Pink Storage Goes Off-Grid with First Net-Zero Self Storage Site

The Washington facility opened earlier this year as the 25th location in the Pink Storage network, following a £1.2 million investment to transform a 1.1-acre site into a modern, technology-led storage facility.

Home to 220 storage units across 35,000 square feet, the site serves customers across Washington, Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham, and now, rather than relying on traditional electricity supplies, the facility runs using a combination of solar power, battery storage and backup generator technology.

The system includes 12 solar panels with a generating capacity of 5.4 kWp and batteries capable of storing 72 kWh of electricity. Together, they'll produce around 1,784 kWh of renewable energy each year, preventing an estimated 0.41 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

It's a relatively simple idea with a significant impact: generate clean energy where it's needed and reduce reliance on the grid.

Good for the Environment – and Good Business

The renewable energy system represents a £40,000 investment, but by generating its own electricity, the site is forecast to reduce energy bills by around £4,000 a year while offering greater protection against rising energy prices and unexpected power cuts. The investment is expected to pay for itself in as little as ten years.
