With Valentine’s Day approaching, you might want someone to share the occasion with. But dating, especially with someone you’ve just met or connected with online, comes with risks.

Whether you're swiping through potential matches or planning a candlelit dinner, the place you call home can make or break your dating experience. Some states offer a relatively safe and drama-free environment for romance, while others… well, let’s say you might want to rethink that first date meetup.

To help keep you safe this Valentine's Day, we analyzed key risk factors including rates of STDs, violent crime, identity fraud, and even drunk driving, to rank all 50 states from safest to riskiest.

So, where does your state land? Let’s find out.

Maine Tops the List as the Safest State for Dating

With a strong track record of low crime and fewer cases of STDs, Maine claims the title of the safest state for dating in 2025. Low rates of syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia, combined with relatively low violent crime numbers, make it a secure spot for singles looking for love.

Joining Maine in the top 5 safest states are New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, and Idaho, all of which score highly for low STD transmission rates and crime statistics.

New England states, in particular, dominate the safety rankings, proving that crisp fall weather and maple syrup aren’t the only things they do well.

Louisiana: The Most Dangerous State for Dating

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Louisiana ranks as the most dangerous state for dating in the U.S. High rates of syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia, combined with alarming violent crime and murder statistics, place it firmly at the bottom.

Also ranking poorly are Arkansas, Mississippi, Nevada, and Missouri, each of which shows concerning levels of crime and health risks that could turn your romantic escapades into a potential safety hazard.

Main Data Table

Every category is given a score between 1 and 50 with 1 being the worst score for that category and 50 being the best except "overall rank" where 1 is the Best State and 50 is the worst and most dangerous.

Key Takeaways from the Study

Crime and STDs go hand in hand.

Our analysis found a strong correlation between violent crime rates and STD prevalence. States with the highest rates of STDs—like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Nevada—also tend to have elevated violent crime numbers, making them riskier for dating.

On the flip side, states with the lowest STD rates, such as Vermont, New Hampshire, and Idaho, also experience some of the lowest violent crime numbers. This suggests that safe public environments and access to health education may contribute to safer dating experiences.

States with high identity fraud cases also have higher numbers of registered sex offenders. This could indicate that areas with higher fraud rates may also have increased risks related to sexual crimes.

Methodology

To identify the safest and most dangerous states for dating in the U.S., Pink Storage analysed all 50 states based on eight equally weighted factors.

These factors included the number of rapes, murders, registered sex offenders, identity theft cases, DUIs, and reported cases of syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia per 100,000 people.

Each state received a score from 1 to 50 for each category, and the totals were used to determine the overall ranking.

The data was sourced from the FBI Crime Data Explorer, SafeHome.org’s registered sex offender database, the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network report, and the CDC.
