Light Years Ahead? Pink Storage Birmingham Demonstrates Fun, Leading Edge Tech for Customers’ Benefit

Pink Storage has been using cutting edge technology to help self storage clients since its inception in 2016. Until now this technology has been applied once it’s out of its ‘early adopter’ phase – the phase where technology first gets used ‘in anger’ and any issues get flushed out.

As a small, fast-growing business harnessing technology to best serve its customers, it’s always been vital to us that the technology we deploy is solid and works well, which normally means we wait until it’s well tested before deployment.

As an example, when signing up for storage, our customers can receive a quote and set up their storage over the web, ready to physically access within minutes. Security onsite includes ANPR (number plate recognition technology) to ensure that only people who are meant to can access Pink Storage sites. State-of-the-art CCTV monitors work on site 24/7.

1. Sign up; 2. Get Pin Code; 3. Done!

Technology is huge part of what makes Pink the success story that it is.

But our most recent self-storage location, in Birmingham, has opened with a newer technology, and we plan to have some fun with it.

LED Pixel Mapping

Pixels are the tiny dots that go to create an image – for example on your mobile phone or television screen, the images are made up of millions of tiny dots. This can now be applied to LED lights. The process is called LED pixel mapping.

Adopting this at Pink Storage’s new Birmingham container storage site has meant that we can create some fabulously bright, eye catching roadside images.

Why Does Signage Matter for Self Storage Customers?

This year’s SSA (Self Storage Association) report  (awaited eagerly by the self storage industry each year) revealed that most people (customers) learn about self-storage facilities from roadside signage. 70% to be exact. Consequently the big, old fashioned, indoor type storage facilities that are traditionally visible from roadsides continue to dominate the self storage industry, despite there being plenty of more convenient, more versatile options available.

Container storage, for example, has the huge advantage of being designed to be watertight and sturdy for some of the toughest imaginable conditions – at sea.

Being able not only to attract attention with our stunning magenta colours, but also with a programable light display has a clear benefit for us (advertising that our business is here), but also for potential customers who can benefit from great prices on secure, clean, drive-up storage facilities without the ‘faff’ of stairs and lifts.

How does Pixel Mapping work?

Pixel mapping takes small sources of LED light from a mixture of places, turning them ‘on’ and ‘off’ to build up an image. It uses a specific, planned layout of fixtures for the lights to ‘play’ together to create the image.

LED Displays and LED Walls are often used in arenas and public spaces: lit up displays which create adverts or information boards. Now dynamic, creative lighting effects can be used outside of these enormous installations to create patterns, colour changes and animations in new and exciting ways.

Pink Storage is among the early business users of Glediator Software ("Graphical LED Installation AnimaTOR"), a small piece of software that can be used to control those LEDs to generate unlimited effects, both static and moving.

How is LED Pixel Mapping Set Up?

The set up sounds complex, but although it’s sophisticated, at Pink Storage we see it as another technology to help us toward our service and growth goals. Technology underpins what we do, but we also have fun with it.

From a video or image, we then use the software to map a video or image, which we then project through an array of LED fixtures.

Whilst it’s obviously a professional tool, what can and will appear is only limited by our imagination.

Why Birmingham?

Birmingham is the latest Pink Storage site to open.

Based on Kingsbury Road in Sutton Coldfield (Minworth), it offers easy access for Birmingham city businesses and homeowners, but is also close to the M6, M42 and the M6 Toll, making it easy for storers to move and keep  safe goods and belongings.

Our new Birmingham container storage site is in an area where there are many businesses, including several auto trade companies and other tradespeople who traditionally love the ease of access and security of Pink Storage sites. It makes sense to make sure they can’t miss us.

From plumbers to heating contractors, from computer companies to the smaller businesses in a local business centre, this is a vibrant business area. So whether they need storage capacity for their businesses, or need storage on a personal level, the location is ideal for them. It would be madness not to be shouting it from the rooftops – but the pixel mapping signage does that in a visual, less noisy way!
