History of Cardiff Castle

Cardiff Castle's rich history begins nearly 2,000 years ago. 

The Romans were the first to build a fort on the site during their conquest of Celtic Britain. The Roman fort, constructed around AD 55, is the foundation upon which the castle's lengthy history is built.

Centuries later, in the 11th century, the Normans built the formidable keep that still dominates the castle grounds today. Climb the spiral stairs of this stone tower, and you will be greeted with panoramic views of the city. The castle's transformation didn't end there. 

In the 19th century, the Marquess of Bute employed Gothic architect William Burges to design opulent and fantastical additions to the castle. These stunning Victorian interiors are laden with intricate carvings, ornate stained glass, and elaborate murals.

It's a mere five-minute stroll from Cardiff Central railway station and a stone's throw away from major bus stops. If you're driving, there's a car park on Castle Street right next to the castle.
