Can you store your car in self-storage?

If you want to know more about whether you can store your car in self-storage, or how to store your car in self-storage, you’ve come to the right place.

Hello car enthusiasts, car owners, and self-storage seekers. If you want to know more about whether you can store your car in self-storage, or how to store your car in self-storage, you’ve come to the right place.

Let's dive straight in! Or should we say, drive straight in…

Can you store a car in self-storage?

Yes, you definitely can store a car in self-storage. Or, at least you can at our self storage facility in Cardiff (and around Wales). Self-storage units come in various sizes, so this might not be true for everyone, however our 160 square foot units are certainly car-friendly. Some units in the UK are even designed specifically to store vehicles, including cars, trucks, RVs, and boats.

What are the benefits of storing a car in self-storage?

Whatever your reason for needing to place your car somewhere safe, there are numerous benefits of storing your car in self-storage. Here are just a few:

Security

Self-storage facilities typically have surveillance cameras and are very safe environments, making them a better option than parking on the street. Our particular self-storage facilities have 24 hour CCTV — so rest assured you are in good hands.

Protection from the elements

Storing your car in a self-storage unit protects it from harsh weather conditions like extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, or hail. Unfortunately, we know all too well here in the UK how rapid weather can change — no matter what month of the year, the weather always surprises us. In self-storage, you are totally protected.

Prevents theft and vandalism

By storing your car in a secure self-storage unit, you minimize the risk of theft or vandalism compared to parking on the street or in an unsecured garage. It’s the harsh truth, but thefts and break-ins do happen and can be devastating for car owners.

Extra space

Families often own more than one car by now, leaving driveways cramped and uncomfortable. If you have limited garage space or no garage at all, storing your car in self-storage frees up space at your home, making it more comfortable to park your other vehicles or use your garage for other purposes.

Peace of mind

Knowing that your car is stored in a secure and protected environment gives you total peace of mind, especially if you have a classic or expensive car. Using a self-storage unit for your car has many benefits, but in my opinion, nothing can beat this one.

Why is self-storage a better option for storing your car than other alternatives?

Of course, street parking, car parks, and unsecured garages are all popular options for storing cars. But self-storage seems to have the upper-hand for a reason. It provides more security and protection from the elements than street parking; it's more cost-effective than renting a garage or a parking space; it gives you complete control over the storage environment, including temperature; and it allows you to access your car whenever you want, unlike public car parks that have limited hours of operation.

Tips on storing a car in self-storage

If you're planning to store your car in self-storage, here are some tips to keep in mind. It’s completely up to you how closely you adhere to them, depending on your car, your own desires, and the length of time your car is in storage.

  • Clean your car thoroughly before storing it to prevent mold, mildew, and odors.

  • Change the oil and filter to ensure that the engine is protected during storage.

  • Fill up the petrol or diesel tank and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from breaking down and damaging the engine.

  • Remove the battery and store it separately in a cool, dry place to prevent it from draining or freezing. Nothing’s worse than a dead battery — we’ve all been there.

  • Inflate the tyres to the recommended pressure and cover them to prevent flat spots.

  • Use a breathable car cover to protect the paint and prevent dust and debris from accumulating on the car's surface.

  • Place a moisture absorber, such as a desiccant or a silica gel packet, in the car to prevent moisture buildup and corrosion.

How to store your classic car in self-storage

If you own a classic car, you know that it requires extra care and attention to keep it in pristine condition. You may want to take some extra steps to look after your beloved, so here are some tips to consider when storing your classic car in self-storage:

  • Wax the car's exterior to protect the paint and prevent rust.

  • Cover the car with a high-quality car cover made of breathable fabric that allows air to circulate.

  • Place a tarp or a plastic sheet under the car.

  • Inflate the tyres to the recommended pressure and place the car on jack stands to relieve the weight from the tires and suspension.

  • Disconnect the battery and store it separately, or use a battery tender to maintain the charge.

  • Use a fuel stabiliser and fill up the petrol or diesel tank to prevent fuel system damage and corrosion.

  • Change the coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid to prevent corrosion and deterioration.

  • Place a moisture absorber, such as a desiccant or a silica gel packet, inside the car and in the storage unit to prevent moisture buildup.

  • Visit your classic car periodically to check for any signs of damage, such as leaks, mold, or mildew.
